Club History | Leicester Academicals FC was founded in the late 1960s as the Leicester University Staff team and initially played only in the University of Leicester intermural leagues against a host of student teams. In the mid-1980s the club finally decided it was good enough to play games outside of term-time and joined the Leicester Grand Sunday League as Leicester Academicals FC (The Accies), wearing green and black stripes and playing on the former home of the University of Leicester cricket club pitches on Welford Road. However, due to the regularly uneven surface, the club soon moved to its current home at the university sports ground on Manor Road in Oadby. Whilst with the Leicester Grand Sunday League the Accies enjoyed success in both cup and league competitions, culminating in a hard-fought victory over fierce rivals Loughborough Academicals in the final of the Grand League Cup at the end of the 1999/2000 season. That season ended with the demise of the Leicester Grand Sunday League and since that time the Accies have been fortunate enough to play their football in the much larger and more competitive Alliance Football League. After two seasons playing in the second division the club gained promotion at the end of the 2001/02 season and, after three years of mid-table mediocrity, the club enjoyed a fantastic 2005/06 season that saw us win the division one championship and reach the final of the Sunday Junior Cup. The Accies are now relishing life in the Alliance Premiership. Since its formation the club has had University of Leicester researchers, lecturers, students and sports staff forming the core (but not all) of the team. The club prides itself on its friendly and competitive attitude to football and this hs been reflected in the awards we have received in recent seasons: the 2000/2001 Fair Play Award and the Referees' Team of the Season for both 2001/2002 and 2002/2003. | |
